| PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| An inflammatory process usually caused by staphylococci involving either the connective
tissue or the glandular tissue of the breast or both. A nipple fissure may of may not be present. |
| PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Milk for the new baby is produced by the glandular tissue of the breast as a result
of stimulation by prolactin, the milk-producing hormone from the pituitary gland. During pregnancy the mammary gland is stimulated to increase in
size in preparation for milk production by progesterone, a hormone produced by the corpus luteum of the ovary. Any involvement of the breast, therefore,
is closely associated with the functioning of the ovaries. |
| TREATMENT: |
| As mastitis is rarely ever seen other than during the nursing period, the welfare of
both the baby and mother must be considered. Some authorities insist upon removing the baby from the breast until the inflammatory process is ended,
while others feel that the baby should continue to nurse and will not be harmed by so doing. Each individual case must be treated thusly on its
own merits. At any rate, the sucking mechanism acts through the CNS to promote proper uterine involution following parturition. Thus, treatment
must be aimed at not only reducing the inflammation, but in supporting the entire female endocrine system, especially the ovarian function and
uterine involution. |
