PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Commonly known as shingles, this is an acute infection of the central nervous system involving the posterior root ganglia of a few segments of the spinal or cranial nerves. Usually unilateral, a painful eruption occurs on the skin along the course of the peripheral sensory nerves arising in the affected root ganglia.

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Caused by the varicella-zoster virus, this condition is more commonly seen in persons over the age of 50 years. One attack usually confers immunity and most persons recover without any residual complications although post-herpetic neuralgia may persist for months or years.

TREATMENT:
