| PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the thyroid gland resulting from iodine deficiency due
to any cause. If the condition exists for a number of years, cysts and adenomas may appear. |
| PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| The iodine-containing hormone, thyroxine, which controls the speed at which controls the speed
at which body metabolism occurs, cannot be produced without adequate iodine intake in the diet. The common type of non-toxic goiter is due to a lack
of iodine; the less common toxic goiter may have a familial tendency, but basically its cause is unknown. |
| TREATMENT: |
| Iodine and other nutrients including vitamins, minerals and enzymes are needed before
sufficient amounts of thyroxine can be produced. The absorption of iodine can be prevented when certain substances in foods, particularly peanuts,
cabbage, kale, brussels sprouts and soy flour, combine with iodine. It is wise to restrict intake of these foods during therapy. Mild deficiencies
of iodine have been associated with toxic or exophthalmic goiter. Nutritional Therapy in both condition includes a high protein diet, avoidance of goitrogen
foods and proper supplementation with natural nutrients. |
