PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

A major cause of blindness in the United States, this disease is characterized by an increase in intraocular pressure with impaired vision ranging from slight abnormalities to total blindness.

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Prolonged stress and an inadequate diet over a long period of time are considered by many authorities to be the main etiological factors in glaucoma. Prolonged stress produces adrenal exhaustion and exhausted adrenals can no longer produce aldosterone which stabilizes salt balance in the body. When too much salt is lost from the body to a marked extent, often tissue fluids will push into the eyeball, increasing the intraocular pressure, forcing the lens forward and damaging the optic nerve. This closes off the Canal of Schlemm, preventing natural drainage of the aqueous and causing visual disturbances and distortions.
