| PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| An excessive accumulation of gas in the stomach and/or intestines. Part of a complex
commonly termed indigestion. Relieved by belching or the passage of flatus. |
| PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| The most carefully planned diet fails to accomplish its purpose unless digestion
and absorption are adequate and normal. Digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid must be produced in adequate amounts to facilitate normal digestion.
Too little hydrochloric acid inhibits protein digestion and the absorption of vitamin C causes the destruction of vitamin B-complex factors and prevents
essential calcium, iron and other minerals from being assimilated to the extent that anemia and bone fragility may develop. A large variety of nutritional
deficiencies may restrict the production of essential enzymes allowing putrefactive bacteria to multiply in tremendous amounts forming great quantities
of stomach and intestinal gas. Further, a deficiency or absence of normal beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract will allow propagation of gas-forming
and disease and odor-forming bacteria. Oral antibiotics kill normal intestinal bacteria which should be replaced by intake of acidophilus milk or yogurt.
Flatulence is also commonly caused when air is swallowed during meals, especially in the nervous or apprehensive person. |
| TREATMENT: |
| The diet should consist of adequate amounts of fresh, raw green vegetables in particular
with care to remove from the diet all sugar, hydrogenated fats and oils, and processed, chemicalized foods. Replacement of normal healthy- producing
bacteria is a must and is accomplished by regular use of fermented foods as yogurt, raw natural sauerkraut, acidophilus milk products, etc. |
