| PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Paroxysmal, transient disorders of cerebral function characterized by sudden, brief
attacks involving changes in the state of consciousness, motor activity, or sensory phenomena. |
| PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Occurring usually between the third and fifteenth year and affecting about five percent
of the population, these convulsive seizures may be associated with or
due to a variety of cerebral disorders. In many instances, no etiological
factor may be determined. Males are usually affected slightly more than females. |
| TREATMENT: |
| Evidence has been mounting to support the view that epilepsy, whether petit mal
or grand mal, is closely associated with nutritional deficiencies and/or allergic phenomena. A high fat diet is effective in helping control seizures.
A lack of vitamin B-6 has produced convulsions identical to epilepsy in experimental animals and in infants and adults. Persons subject to epilepsy
have been given large amounts of vitamin B-6 with excellent results. Need for the rest of the vitamin B-complex, especially pantothenic acid and
vitamin B2, is increased when large amounts of vitamin B-6 are given. As epileptic attacks frequently begin with some allergic manifestation, it
is essential to try to determine what substance is the villain and eliminate it. Treatment with magnesium has given good results in epileptic persons,
especially children. In addition, a large number of epileptics have a defect in carbohydrate metabolism and are hypoglycemic. |
