| PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| The involuntary emptying of the bladder beyond the expected age of continence during sleep.
There is usually no underlying organic cause. However, in some cases anatomic causes are phimosis, meatal stricture and meatitis, urethral stricture
and contracture of the vesical neck. In obstructive uropathies, the bladder responds by hypertrophy, trabeculation and increased irritation causing
uninhibited contraction during sleep. Urethritis, juvenile diabetes, cystitis, epilepsy and pinworms may also cause enuresis. |
| PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Emotional factors are frequent causes of nocturnal enuresis and there may be a familial
history of enuresis with delayed maturation of the bladder. Emotional factors in a previously continent child may be due to the birth of a sibling, a
divorce action in the family, or death of a close relative. |
| TREATMENT: |
| All forms of therapy should be reinforced by strong suggestion and explanation. The
child's cooperation can be enhanced by loving explanation and reassurance that overcomes fear and anxiety on the part of the child. under certain
conditions, tapes may be played which the child can listen to and add to his confidence that he is not doing something wrong or to be ashamed of,
but that the condition is correctable and with the cooperation of everyone will cure itself. |
