PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Frequent and repeated passage of unformed, watery stools. Primarily the result of increased peristalsis, diarrhea is a frequent symptom of gastrointestinal disturbances.

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Diarrhea may be the symptom of many GI disorders and can be either acute or chronic. The acute form may be part of a malabsorption syndrome or a regional enteritis. Irritable syndrome may be responsible for chronic diarrhea and some diarrheas are iatrogenic, ie., secondary to excessive use laxatives or to therapy with broad-spectrum antibiotics.

TREATMENT:
Any underlying systemic disease must be considered and eradicated. Excessive use of laxatives must be-discontinued and establishment of a nutritional program of natural foods must be started. Supplemental therapy must be the nidum upon which a return to normalcy must be based.
