PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
The common cold is an acute catarrhal infection of the upper respiratory tract with major involvement of the naso-pharynx, nasal sinuses and larynx. Influenza is a highly contagious acute disease caused by a virus and characterized by fever, prostration, bodily aches and pains, and acute inflammation of the respiratory mucosa. Related viruses cause a number of respiratory illnesses usually, but not always, febrile.

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Any one of a large number of viruses may cause the common cold, although influenza is usually caused by one or more influenza or para-influenza viruses. However, the similarity of these conditions in relation to the involvement of the upper respiratory tract allows them to be considered in the same therapeutic framework.

TREATMENT:
Bed rest, especially febrile cases, is indicated. Patient should be protected from fatigue and exposure and the diet should be light with a high fluid intake. Note that antibiotics do not affect the common cold or any other virus-caused infection; therefore, they are not recommended unless a severe bacterial complication occurs.
