| PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Cheilosis is a form of stomatitis characterized by pallor and maceration of the mucosa
at the angles of the mouth. Superficial linear fissures often occur which may leave scars on healing. |
| PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| This is definitely a form of avitaminosis, especially involving a deficiency or lack of riboflavin
(B-2) primarily and possibly pyridoxine (B-6) also. The condition is associated
with inadequate consumption of milk, milk products and animal protein.
It is seen most frequently in cases of liver disease, chronic diarrhea,
chronic alcoholism, and when intravenous infusions of glucose are given without preventive vitamin replacement. |
| TREATMENT: |
| Correction of avitaminosis is the primary objective with emphasis on large amounts
of vitamins B-2, B-6 and B-12. It is always essential in any use of large
amounts of individual vitamin B components to give the entire vitamin B-
complex in natural form first and then add components above the normal
complex. Essential fatty acids are often deficient in these cases and should be supplied in the diet. |
