PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Burns are tissue injuries caused by thermal, electrical, chemical, or radioactive agents. The mechanism is destructive of tissue protein resulting in cell injury or death depending upon the type, duration and intensity of the action of the agent.

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Classified into three types: first, second and third degree according to severity. The first local evidence of a burn is dilation of capillaries and small vessels with increased capillary permeability. This results in plasma loss and edema, then cellular injury and destruction with coagulation of cytoplasm. Infection follows unless adsequate care and treatment is instituted immediately.

TREATMENT:
Systemic treatment for shock is the immediate concern in extensive burns. Therapy includes relief of pain, strict asepsis and care of the burn area, correction of anemia, and maintenance of fluids and nutrients. Nutritional support with concentrated natural supplements is mandatory. Optimal burn diets should include 20% of energy from whey protein, 2% from arginine, .5% from cysteine and .5% from histidine. Fats should be 15% of the nonprotein calories with 50% from fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) and 50% from Flax seed oil (linoleic acid).
