PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Localized or diffuse inflammation of the bronchial tree. It may be acute or chronic and is caused by infections or by chemical or physical agents.

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
In the acute form, the trachesbronchial tree is involved with an infectious process causing an acute inflammation of the entire respiratory system. Acute systemic symptoms are present. The condition is usually self-limiting and there is eventual complete healing and return of function. In the chronic form, there is progressive degeneration of tissue with thickening of the bronchial mucosa with a developing inelasticity. Hypertrophy and hypersecretion of the "goblet cells" are characteristic. The chronicity may be progressive with pulmonary fibrosis, obstructive emphysema, bronchiectasis and massive degenerative changes in the respiratory mechanism.

TREATMENT:
Alleviation of the irritating cough should be the first consideration. In the acute form, it is a productive cough with mucous and serous exudate expelled, but in the chronic form it is usually a dry, wracking cough and the paroxysms are severe and debilitating. Measures must also be employed to improve general circulation and increase excretory and detoxifying activities of the kidneys, liver, skin, and intestines. Malnutrition is almost always a concomitant feature of the chronic form and nutritional deficiencies are usually noted in the acute form of bronchitis.
