| PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Ulceration and necrosis of tissues overlying a bony prominence which has been subjected
to prolonged pressure. |
| PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Occurs most frequently in patients who are paralyzed, debilitated, emaciated, or otherwise
bedridden for a long period of time. Constant pressure causes a sluggish circulation and stasis and the tissue becomes ischemic, followed by redness,
then vinduration or vesicle formation occurs, and lastly, there is tissue necrosis with slow lysis and separation from living tissue. Bone and other
underlying tissue may be exposed and infection is most common at this stage. |
| TREATMENT: |
| Prophylactic measures and treatment of the underlying pathology which has caused the patient to become bedridden
must be instituted as soon as possible. As these patients are always nutritionally bankrupt, it is necessary to institute a high
protein, high caloric, high vitamin diet with supplementary high potency, natural food supplements. |
