PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Pain in the spine is most frequent in low back area, although it may occur in any part of the back. Poor posture is probably the most frequent cause, but trauma in the form of acute injury, or severe strain, is very common. Backache may be the result of arthritis, acute illness, infections of the genito-urinary tract, bone abnormalities as osteoporosis, or ankylosing spondylitis may be in the etiological picture. Lesions of the intervertebral discs are also a common cause of backaches.

PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Generally, severe backaches occur at the bottom end of the spine, which bears almost half the weight of the body. Poor posture puts the spinal joints at, or near, the end of their normal motion, and muscle power alone maintains the integrity of the joints. However, if this compensation is broken, even by slight strain or stress, decompensation results and backache ensues. Much of the poor posture stems from childhood and adolescence through faulty nutrition. Prolonged deficiency of calcium and vitamin D produces generalized bone demineralization and porosis. Bone formation, or repair and growth, is halted by a deficiency of protein and the enzymes and nutrients necessary to utilize it, and by an inadequacy of vitamin C which is essential for connective tissue and the cartilaginous tough matrix of bone to maintain normalcy.

TREATMENT:
Poor posture may be the prime cause of backache, but it is evident that poor nutrition is the predisposing cause of poor posture. Poor nutrition is also responsible for bone, ligament, cartilage, and other supporting structural tissue weakness. Attention to infections, general ill health, and the care and prevention of trauma is necessary, but the most important therapy is to restore the body's nutrition to a high level through adequate, natural food intake with the regular use of concentrated food supplements of the right sort.
