| PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Acute infectious conditions, certain chronic systemic diseases, psychiatric disturbances,
and starvation are amongst the common pathologies involved in impaired or decreased appetite. Persistent worry, psychological upsets, and extreme
loneliness can result in lack of appetite. The whole phenomena of psychological disorders affecting appetite has been Called anorexia nervosa or nervous
loss of appetite. As desire for food dwindles and less food is eaten, the stomach shrinks and desire for food continues to decrease or is lost entirely.
Severe malnutrition often results and death from starvation actually can occur. |
| PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Appetite is an emotion which we acquire as we mature. It is an excellent regulator
of food intake as it makes us want to eat foods we need in some variety. It acts somewhat like a thermostat in that it regulates the kinds of quantities
of nutritional substances needed for total body health. Unless digestion and absorption are efficient, however, the most carefully balanced diet
fails to accomplish its purpose. A lack of vitamins, especially B vitamins, results in loss of appetite. Without vitamin B a marked reduction in gastric
digestive secretions is noted, especially hydrochloric acid. Digestion is thus defective, intestinal putrification occurs, and body toxins accumulate.
Nausea and vomiting may occur, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy; essential minerals are leached out of the body, particularly magnesium
and potassium; and the condition may become critical. |
