| PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| A syndrome due to myocardial oxygen deficit, characterized by prolonged substernal,
thoracic pain which is precipitated chiefly by emotion, exercise, or the ingestion of a heavy meal. It is caused by a temporary inability of the
coronary arteries to supply sufficient blood to the heart muscle. |
| PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| The coronary arteries may be sclerosed causing a diminution of blood flow due to the
reduced size of the lumen. Or there may be a low mean aortic pressure with decreased perfusion of the coronary arteries due to aortic valvular disease.
The pain usually lasts about 30 seconds and is relieved by rest and medication. Diagnosis is made upon location, intensity and duration of pain, relation
to exercise, and relief upon the administration of nitroglycerin. Angina is many times accompanied by a drop in blood sugar, and hypoglycemia should
be taken into consideration. Angina may also occur in a diabetic if a sudden drop in blood sugar level is relatively abrupt, though still on the high side. |
