| PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| Secondary anemias cover a wide range of etiological factors, but all have in common the reduction in number of circulating red blood cells,
reduction of volume of packed red cells per 100 ml of blood, or a reduction in the amount of hemoglobin, or a combination of these conditions. Secondary
anemias also classified as to morphology and mean Corpuscular volume. |
| PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: |
| The specific cause, in any anemia, must be discerned and removed. If the cause is a
deficiency of some food or other nutrient substance, this must be replaced. Iron-deficiency anemia is probably the most common secondary anemia in
the United States. Malnutrition, especially in the elderly, is responsible for a great many cases of secondary anemia. Anemia is commonly seen in
pregnant women whose food intake is not adequate or is deficient in certain areas of nutrients. |
